The MystixOn the heels of their Grammy recognition, The Mystix are back in the rehearsal halls! This time, The Mystix are going deeper into the roots of Americana to bring back music of the 1920's, and earlier. Rehearsals have included traditional roots songs as well as some of their own new originals!

"The creative juices are flowing as never before!" said Band Leader Jo Lily.

Although Marty Richards is currently touring with Joe Perry, he will be included on some sessions in between gigs and recordings. For the others, Drummer Legend Jim Gwynn (currently the percussionist for the Boston Pops) has been joining the band.

Fans of roots rock are into the Mystix
— Christopher Blagg - The Boston Herald (June 19, 2009)

Some of the best musicians in rock 'n' roll never see the light of day.

They toil away in obscurity as studio session players or as underappreciated touring sidemen. But the time has come for a few of Boston’s best roots players to get out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Meet the Mystix, who get Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone’s weeklong Joe's Jazz & Blues Fest rolling Saturday with a free show at Powderhouse Park.

The quintet, founded by singer Jo Lily, wants to be known as a real band, not just a group of hired guns. While Lily handpicked his favorite sidemen and session players, all five members have a say in the direction of the sound.

The Mystix in the Boston Globe

Great blurb on The Mystix in the Saturday edition of The Boston Globe:

The Boston Globe

Close to home

They stay pretty close to home as the Mystix, but as sidemen, these musicians have worked with Jerry Lee Lewis, Mary J. Blige, Li'l Wayne, Susan Tedeschi, Peter Wolf, John Hammond, Gary Burton, Duke Robillard, and the latest incarnation of the J. Geils Band. The Mystix draw inspiration from vintage radio shows, vinyl, and field recordings, and are led by raspy-voiced singer-songwriter Jo Lily from Duke and the Drivers. Music of rural America takes over Johnny D's where the band will celebrate its new release, "Down to the Shore." 9:45 p.m. $10. Johnny D's, 17 Holland St., Davis Square, Somerville. 617-776-2004. www.johnnyds.com

The Mystix - Band Not River at Johnny D's

The Mystix

Singer-guitarist Jo Lily likes to look at the band he fronts, The Mystix, as containing "some of the top guns that are out there." Like guitarist Bobby Keyes, drummer Marty Richards, bassist Marty Ballou and keyboardist Tom The MystixWest. (Lily used to be known as Sam Deluxe, when he sang for Duke and the Drivers.) Lily says the Mystix, which plays Johnny D's,Saturday April 11 took the name because "we like the idea of magic in the music, that's the only reason we're still playing. .
